Robert and his wife Victoria Nunley Arden relocated to Indiana from Virginia. In 1910 they had 6 children, and Victoria was pregnant with the 7th. In August of 1910, eldest daughter Susie Blanche died at the age of 12. On October 3rd, still grieving from the tragic death of her daughter, Victoria gave birth to a son, who died the same day. At the end of October, Victoria also died, possibly from tuberculosis, but that is unconfirmed. It might also explain Susie Blanche's death. The family had lost 3 out of 9 members within a few months. The youngest daughter, Lucille, was 3 years old when her mother died. Unable to care for a toddler under these conditions, Robert was forced to let another family take Lucy to raise as their own.
