"The Davey family immigrated west from Dodgeville, WI to California by train. (After 1880 census-before 1887, per her obituary, she moved to California about 10 years before she died.) They lived near or in Fairplay, which is located in southern El Dorado Co, CA."
Dodgeville Chronicle, Friday, July 2, 1897 issue:
"Death of Mrs. Mary A. Papineau. Died, at Placerville, California, June 20, 1897, of rheumatism of the heart, Mrs. Mary A. Papineau, formerly of this city. Deceased formerly resided in Dodgeville, and was the wife of the late John Davey, who died here several years ago. She left here about 10 years ago and went to California where she remarried. She was the step-mother of Mr. W. J. Davey, painter, and Miss Lizzie Davey, of this city. She leaves four children at her home in California, the youngest of whom is 13 years of age, all of whom were born in this city."
"Mr. W. J. Davey received a letter this week from his half-sister in California, stating that his mother died very suddenly and was buried near her home there. She was well-known among the people of Dodgeville among whom she had lived for many years."
As Shirlee Eddy points out, the date of death differs from the Placerville death record for Mary Papineau by 2 days, saying June 22, 1897.
