Son of Robert H Billups and Paulina Davidson. James first married his cousin Margaret Jane Billups daughter of William Billups on 29 Nov 1859 in Scotland County, Missouri They had seven children, Cinthia Olive Billups Parrish 1861-1921, Jahile Franklin Billups 1865-1944, Sophia Clemmons Billups Born 1870-1944, Charles Pinkney Billups 1872-1944, Rosalie Billups Parrish 1874-1909, John Billups 1879-?,and James W Billups 1866-Abt 1875. James had several occupations Soldier, Saw Mill owner, Blacksmith and Farmer. He Enlisted on 2 Jan 1862 and served in Company D(?),7th Carvery Regiment of West Virginia during the Civil War, he as mustered out 2 Jan 1865. After he was mustered out, with Marauders such as Quantrill, roaming Missouri, James and Margaret packed up their belongings and began the trek to Oregon. Just outside of Salt Lake City their son Jahile was born in a covered wagon. Shortly after, they learned that it was becoming safer in Missouri and decided to return there. Their son James W. Billups was born in 1866in Missouri so They were back in Missouri by then. Margaret died in 1884 from Typhoid.


James married Christine "Kate" Coldadt on 6 Feb 1889, they had five children Perry J Billups 1891-1903, Stella Grace Billups Max 1892-1955, Bernice M Billups Frary 1894-1989, Luticia Marie Billups 1896-1915. Garnet M Billups Musser 1905-1999
