LUMBERMAN CRUSHED TO DEATH BY FALLING TREE
Waverly, January 26, 1914.
Clarence J. Howell, 43 years of age, and a father of a good sized family was almost instantly killed when a tree fell upon him in a lumbering camp near Lockwood at 3:15 o'clock this afternoon. Coroner Betowski, together with newspaper representatives from this city undertook to make a trip from Lockwood in automobiles and became snowbound until late tonight.
Howell was working in a timber tract owned by his brother-in-law, Wesley Ackley, located several miles north of this village, and near Lockwood, a small station on the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Extensive timbering operations are carried on in this section, and Howell who lived in the vicinity was engaged in some of these camps during the present winter. While felling a tree and after one of the big trees in the Ackley tract of timber had been cut so that it was ready to fall, Howell in some way got in the path of the falling giant and was unable to get out of the way in time.
