OBITUARY
It is with sorrow that we are called upon to record the death of two of our most respected citizens in this week's paper, as it appears that we are fast loosing our best citizens. The second is the death of John Dean Howell of Dean Settlement, which occurred at his home at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday morning, aged 55 years.
Mr. Howell was born and always lived in the town of Spencer, being a farmer by occupation. He was a soldier in the late war [Civil War] and was a member of Dawson Post. During his Army life he received a sun stroke, from which, it is believed, has come most of his infirmities, as he has never been well, since. His last, serious illness dates back but a few weeks ago when he was stricken with paralysis while in the woods, an account of which was recorded in these columns at that time. Since then he has been in a very low condition and for the past few days the end has been constantly expected.
Your reporter was not personally acquainted with Mr. Howell, be we learn that he was a good neighbor and citizen in every sense of the word, and his loss in the community in which he lived will be greatly felt.
Mr. Howell leaves a wife [Delphene Deyo] and seven children, namely: Clarence Howell, Marcy Howell, Mathias Howell, Mrs. James Tyler [Myrta], Mrs. Roy Warner [Nellie] of Ithaca, Mrs. Frank Davenport [Lena], and Miss May Howell. Also, three brothers and two sisters, namely: Mr. Chancey Howell of Pennsylvania, Mr. Charles Howell, Mr. James K Howell, Mrs. Amos VanMarter [Mary J ], and Mrs. William Cashman [Sarah] of Spencer.
The funeral is held today [Thursday] at the M E Church [Methodist-Episcopal] at 1:00. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
The NEEDLE joins with the host of friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved family.
