Robert "R.L." Westbrook

Another angel ascended into heaven on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014. Robert L. Westbrook Jr. (R.L. or Pops) passed from this world into his heavenly home leaving behind his beloved son, G. Kent Westbrook and wife Becky, and daughter, Cinda Westbrook Ross and husband Kennith. He is also survived by one brother, James E. "Sonny" and wife Jackie Westbrook, of Crockett; a sister, Dorothy Arnold, of Crockett, and a sister, Jan Lee, of Bracketville; as well as a brother-in-law, Raymond Porter, of Fort Worth.

R.L. was born on June 14, 1923, in Crockett to Robert Lee and Lena Simms Westbrook and passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014, at East Texas Medical Center in Jacksonville.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Modelle Allen Westbrook; sons, Roy Lee and Rodney Westbrook; as well as daughter-in-law, Linda Pope Westbrook; grandson, Robert Westbrook; and great-grandson, Allen Poteet. He also was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.

During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps. He went to work for the Missouri Pacific Railroad when he was 17 and worked for them for 30 years. Upon his retirement from the railroad he became owner of Westbrook Gulf Service Station. In 1973 he formed a partnership with son, Kent Westbrook, and retired from the station in 1994 with aspirations to travel and spend time with Modelle.

R.L. was a member of the First United Methodist Church from 1946 to present time, and was a member of the Alpha Omega Sunday School Class.

Pops (as his grandchildren called him) was an avid hunter and enjoyed spending time with his sons, grandsons and great-grandchildren.

He was a loving grandfather to his grandchildren which included Allen and Camille Ross, of Tyler, Cathy and Mark Vise, of San Antonio, Kim and James Stark, of Arp, Dianna and Bill Mettlach, of Halletsville, Kari and James Jamerson, of Barbourville, Kentucky, Dr. Brad and Destiny Westbrook, of Jacksonville, James and Jenny Hayes, of Jacksonville, Laura and Mike Ferguson, of Rhome, Ronnie and Amanda Westbrook, of Jacksonville, and Devan Westbrook, of Jacksonville.

Pops is also survived by 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and a score of friends.

A private graveside service will be held for the family on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, at 11 a.m. in Resthaven Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Jacksonville. Visitation with family will be held following memorial service in Waller Hall of church. The service will be officiated by the Rev. Jack Albright, the Rev. Doug Wintermute and Dr. Faulk Landrum.

Pops was a family man who loved his family dearly. He always had a smile and kind word for everyone. He loved his God, family and friends.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to First United Methodist Church or charity non-profit organizations of choice.

The family offers a special thanks to Dr. James Low and ICU staff at East Texas Medical Center in Jacksonville."
