George was born and raised in Richmond (now known as Grand River) which is north of Painesville, Ohio. George was Richmond's oldest resident when he died. He was born in a log cabin on Heisley Rd. just south of Lake Shore Blvd., and he was a painter and carpenter by trade. As a young man he served for a time as marshal of Richmond. George said that although under-age, "he and another lad walked to Painesville to vote in the "old courthouse" for Abraham Lincoln."
