Military Service: "KOONTZ, SAMUEL; Pvt., Co. B. b. N.C. 4/18/23. Farmer, age 37, Northern Dist., Davidson Co., N.C. 1860 census. Enl. Davie Co., N.C. 12/19/62. Present through 6/63: Ab. on detail 7-8/63. Present 9/63-4/1/64 and 7-8/64, no horse since 7/15/64. Issued clothing 9/30 & 12/31/64. NFR. Farmer. d. 9/27/95. Bur. Salem Meth. Ch. Cem., Davie Co., N.C.

"Private, Carolina Rangers, Company B, 10th Virginia Cavalry Regiment--Samuel was born on April 13, 1823, to Andrew and Magdalene Hedrick Koontz. He worked as a farmer, and, on May 6, 1846, he married Louisa Shoaf. Samuel and Louisa would have eight children, Triphenia (1847), Mary A. (1849), Wilson S. (1851), Parthenia (1853), Malinda (1854), Roberta (1856), Andrew J. (1859), and John H. (1862), before Samuel enlisted in Davie County on December 19, 1862. He was listed as absent, without a horse, on July 15, 1864. Samuel was reported present from September 1864 through December 31, 1864, when he was issued a clothing ration. After the war, Samuel and Louisa moved to Davie County, where they would have one more child: Thomas (1866). Samuel lived in Davie County until his death on September 27, 1895. He is buried at Salem Methodist Church."
