John was born to Andrew and Margaret Hedrick Koontz. He worked as a farmer and on March 15, 1860, he married Jane Elizabeth Craver.

In 1871, John bought a 267-acre tract of the Davidson County portion of Peter W. Hairson's 'Cooloomee' plantation.
