The son of Peter & Margaret (Zug) Brindle, in 1860 he was a merchant living with and/or working for the Neiswanger family in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, and had already amassed unusually large amount of personal wealth ($10,000). Note that he is frequently confused with a younger David Brindle then living in Middlesex Township, Cumberland County.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Mechanicsburg September 11, 1862, mustered into state service that day as a private with Co. F, 1st Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company September 24, 1862. The experience was as uneventful as it was brief.

He married Mary Ellen Moriarty and fathered Eleanor G. (b. 08/19/75), Margaret M. (b. 01/016/78), and David Aloysius (b. 08/19/81). He died "chronic heart disease valvular." His death certificate spells his surname "Brindel."
