Obituary: Mrs. Eliza Guy is dead. She was born November 1, 1869 and died May 11, 1958. She was the oldest girl born to Marion and Jane Millsasps near Rush Branch, Watauga County, North Carolina.
They moved to a small farm near the mouth of Beech Creek, where Eliza attended public school, lived on a farm and grew to maturity. She, in early childhood, joined the Baptist Church and was baptized. She tried to live the life of a Christian.
She was married to John Guy. To them twelve children were born, nine of whom survive her. Her husband preceded her in death.
She raised her family on a small farm near the mouth of Beech Creek. She was considered smart in business affairs and worked hard on her farm.
She became interested, in her early life, in the birth and rearing and care of children, and she served for many years as a licensed midwife assisting in the birth and care and growth of young children. "Granny Guy" as she was called, had a smile and a pleasant word for everybody. During her long service as a midwife, she had to travel either foot or horse back, day or night in rain or a snowstorm accompanied by a lone guide to a lonely home in mountainous country where a baby was being born.
It is said of Granny Guy that she served 31 years as a licensed midwife and never lost a baby.
The State of North Carolina has lost one of its best citizens. The lack of her presence will be mourned by her friends and citizens and the mothers and children of the neighborhood where she lived. She has gone to the reward and a much needed rest.
