Robert Atwater (also recorded as Water and Attwater) was a man of fortune and a Justice of the Peace of the county. He and his wife, Catherine Bright, had twelve sons and two daughters. The sons all died of the plague before the birth of the daughters.
There can be no doubt that Robert was a devoted adherent of the reformed religion. His two daughters visited the reformers in the prison. Letters written to the daughters are published by the martyr, John Bradford, while imprisoned in the Tower of London.
