Alvin Hayes, 83, of Bloomington, passed away Friday, October 27, 2006, at the Bloomington Hospital.

Born May 30 1923, on Saddle Creek, in Polk Township. He was the youngest son of Roscoe R. and Della Mae (Grubb) Hayes. His father was a farmer, and Alvin remembered carrying water to him, when he was working in the fields, from the cold springs on his grandfather's, Joseph B. Hayes, homeplace.

There are seven children in the family: Marie, Thelma, Sam, Alvin, Betty, Mary and Lavern. The mother, Della died when Alvin was nine years old.

As a child Alvin attended the Burgoon School and later Smithville High School.

During World War II, Alvin entered in the U.S. Army on January 14, 1943. He served in the South Pacific, and was discharged March 21, 1946. After his discharge he returned to work at the U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot at Crane, Indiana. He was an Engineering Technician in Research and Development.

On January 24, 1944, in Brownstown, IN, he married his wife of 63 years Ruth L. Hillenburg, daughter of Bural Hillenburg and Needra Southern, Alvin met Ruth at the Covey Ridge Church of God, before he entered the army. He and Ruth have attended the Valley Mission Church of the Nazarene for over 50 years. They have three children, Terry Lee, who married Jeanne Fields. Darry Don, who married Barbara Lucas. Don has two children: Matthew Lee and Meleah Dawn. The Hayes' third child is Glenda Charlene, who married Stephen Maddox. She has three children Needra Renee, Stephanie Nicole, and Dustin Stephen. There are seven great-grandchildren: Alex Basinger, Branson Henson/Maddox, Nick Basinger, Taylor Hayes, Presley Clark, Chesney Clark, and Maggie Mae Moore.

He was preceded in death by a sister: Lavern Dumas, and his parents.

Alvin and his sons also owned the Hayes Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac dealership in Spencer, IN.

Alvin has always enjoyed fishing and hunting. He always looked for mushrooms. When the children were small, he and brother Sam would go back to the old place. Then they took children and grandchildren, to look in those special places for mushrooms.

Another special place on Saddle Creek was Patton Cave. Alvin enjoyed taking his family there and having picnics near the creek and roaming the hills where they grew up. Since Lake Monroe was built, the old homeplace no longer exists.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at the Allen Funeral Home with Revs. J.D. Pickens and Duane Brown officiating.

Burial will be at Clear Creek Cemetery.
