Thelma (Hayes) Hays Blackwell
AUG. 8, 1918 – NOV. 10, 2016

BLOOMINGTON – Thelma (Hayes) Hays Blackwell passed into the arms of her Savior on Thursday, November 10, 2016 in her home with her loving family by her side. Born August 8, 1918 on Saddle Creek, in Polk Township, Thelma was the second oldest daughter of Roscoe R. and Della Mae (Grubb) Hayes. As a child Thelma attended Burgoon School and graduated from Smithville High School. She was a group leader at RCA for over 20 years and following her retirement, she was employed by the Department of Natural Resources. She assisted her husband, Hershel Blackwell, in the preservation of Ruffed Grouse in the state of Indiana, and she was very passionate about the opportunity this afforded future generations to enjoy.

Thelma was a long-time member of South Union Christian Church, where she taught young adults for many years. Thelma had a love for life, her family and friends, and was a positive, inspirational person who enjoyed life to its fullest, especially cooking and entertaining for them. But above all, she always put the needs of her family and others first. She appreciated nature and was an avid mushroom hunter as well as a nurturer to all God’s critters. Thelma was truly the Matriarch of her family and was highly respected for her wisdom and mentoring. Our lives are diminished without her, but greater for having known her love.

On June 23, 1941, in Bloomington, she married William H. Hays who preceded in death, June 26, 1965. She later married Hershel Blackwell in 1970 who preceded in death February 14, 2003. Family she leaves behind are her children, Brenda (Charles) Records, Diane (Robert) Richardson, Kathy (the late William) Fish; daughter in law, Carol Hays (the late William Hays Jr.), a sister, Mary Ann (William) Polley. Her grandchildren, Brad Hays, Michelle (Marty) Collier, Christina (the late Matthew) Fulton, Melissa (Collin) Newcomb; great grandchildren, Blake and Alex Collier, Tyler, Emily, and Audrey Fulton, and Luke Newcomb. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were son, Stephen Hays, granddaughter April Records and great grandson Brady; her sisters Marie Adams, Laverne Dumas, and Betty Moulder, as well as brothers Alvin Hayes and Woodrow Sam Hayes.

Visitation for Thelma will be 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 14, 2016 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St., Bloomington. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on November 14 with Pastor David Beecham officiating. Burial will follow at South Union Cemetery.
