Minnie Courtland was born Willemina Martina Spruijt. However, when her father emigrated to the United States in 1885 he assumed the surname "Courtland" as his older brother Pieter Spruijt (Capt. William Courtland) had done several years before.

Minnie was one of eight children. Her siblings were Pieter Krijn Spruijt, who died in infancy in the Netherlands; Clara Adriana Spruijt (Courtland); Pieter Krijn Spruijt (Carl Peter Courtland); Richard "Dick" Courtland; Nathan William "Thijs" Courtland; Jennie Courtland; and John H. Courtland.

Minnie married Gustave Henry "Gus" Fischer, son of John and Augusta (Seeco) Fischer, on August 31, 1907 in Ludington, Michigan. They had four children: John Richard, F. Courtland "Corky", Robert G., and Dorothy Augusta Fischer.
