Carl was one of eight children. His siblings were Pieter Krijn Spruijt, who died in infancy in the Netherlands; Clara Adriana Spruijt (Courtland); Willemina Martina "Minnie" Spruijt (Courtland); Richard "Dick" Courtland; Nathan William "Thijs" Courtland; Jennie Courtland; and John H. Courtland. Pieter Krijn , Clara, Carl Peter, and Willemina were born in Schiedam, the Netherlands; Richard, Nathan, Jennie, and John were born in Mason County, Michigan.
Like the rest of his family, Pieter Krijn adopted the surname "Courtland", and Americanized his given names to "Carl Peter".
Carl married Katherine "Kate" Bertha Decker, daughter of John Decker and Lovina Geiger of Pigeon, Huron County, Michigan. Carl and Kate married in Kilmanaugh, Huron County, Michigan on October 7, 1912. They had four known children:
1) Richard C. Courtland (1913-1965), who was married twice. the name of his first wife is unknown; his second wife was Helen DuCamp;
2) Evelyn Jane Courtland (1916-1999), who married William Woodrow Workman;
3) Howard John Courtland (1921-1998), who married Martha Helen Roe;
4) Arthur Leroy Courtland (1925-2001, who married Mary Lou Hardman.
Carl, a veterinarian, passed away at the age of 43 years. He had been summoned to care for a horse, was caught in an unexpected rainstorm, and caught pneumonia.

Mrs. Scott Hamilton of 608 East Foster Street received word of the death of her brother, Dr. C.P. Courtland, who passed away Saturday morning at his home in DeWitt, Michigan, death resulting from pneumonia.
Dr. Courtland, a veterinary surgeon, left here 16 years ago. He had practiced in Bay City, Saginaw, and DeWitt. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Jennie Courtland of this city; three sisters, Mesdames Scott Hamilton, Minnie Fischer, and Jennie Hamel, and two brothers, John Courtland of Detroit and Dick of Muskegon.
Mrs. Courtland and Scott Hamilton left Thursday morning to go to Dr. Courtland’s bedside.
