Richard "Dick" Courtland was the son of Dirk (Spruijt) Courtland and Jennie Verboom. Dick's parents were born in Schiedam, Province of South Holland, the Netherlands, and emigrated to Ludington in 1885. When his father emigrated to the United States he assumed the surname "Courtland" as his older brother Pieter Spruijt (Capt. William Courtland) had done several years before.

Dick was one of eight children. His siblings were Pieter Krijn Spruijt, who died in infancy in the Netherlands; Clara Adriana Spruijt (Courtland); Pieter Krijn Spruijt (Carl Peter Courtland); Willemina Martina "Minnie" Spruijt (Courtland); Nathan William "Thijs" Courtland; Jennie Courtland; and John H. Courtland.

Dick Courtland Expires Monday

Dick Courtland, 68, former Ludington resident, died Monday night at the home of his niece Mrs. Robert Cole of North Muskegon, were he had made his home for two years.

Born in Ludington Sept. 17, 1888, he went to Muskegon in 1917 to work for Cow & Campbell Lumber mills. He worked for Shaw Walker Co. for 15 years prior to his retirement two years ago.

Mr. Courtland was married in 1918 in North Muskegon to the former Mabel Curtis Cleaver who died in May 1950.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Fisher of Ludington and Mrs. Jennie Hamel of California; a brother, John of Detroit; a stepson, Clifford Cleaver of North Muskegon; and several nieces and nephews including Mrs. Clifford French of Ludington.

Funeral services are planned for 10:30 a.m. Saturday from Witt funeral home on Peck Street, Muskegon. Interment will be in Laketon Township Cemetery, Muskegon.
