Early Parish Citizen Ends Own Life in Spirit of Despondency Saturday
Louis Clifton Arant, 67, was buried Monday at the War Cemetery in the PIne Grove Community following services conducted by Rev. H. M. Bennett and Rev. C. E. McLean.

The elderly farmer died of a self-inflicted would at his farm home three miles northeast of Bastrop, Saturday afternoon. A coroner's inquest place the time of his death about 1:30pm. His body was discovered around 4pm by Mrs. Arant, who was not awakened as she slept in another room when the tragedy occurred.

Friends and relatives were of the opinion that Mr. Arant ended his own life in a spirit of despondence. He had been brooding over ill health and farm problems for several days. His death nevertheless was a distinct shock to all with whom he was acquainted.

Mr. Arant was born in Morehouse Parish on Septemer 12, 1873. He and Mrs. Arant homesteaded their 40 acre farm, which is situated a short distance north of the Cooper Lake Road and here they reared a large family. A few frequent trips he made outside of the parish were to Arkansas back in the early days when he was called to Little Rock on one or more occasions in regard to the homesteading of his place. He was a respected farmer and was widely known throughout the community in which he had resided all of his life.
