AWARDED A HERO MEDAL
"George E. Hemphill of Anna has been awarded a bronze medal and $ 1,000 in cash by the Carnegie Commission for his heroism in descending into a well and bringing out Clarence Slaughter, after the latter had been overcome by gas, which followed the firing of a blast. A brother of Slaughter had given up the attempt, but Hemphill was not deterred by that fact. He went down and fastened a rope to Slaughter. Slaughter died four days later, Hemphill said he did not think he was in danger. Collin county will be gratified to see that his courage is fittingly recognized."
