William was one of ten children born to Rice Evans Brown and Anna Crow Pruitt in Gregg Township of Morgan Co. He married Lovey S. Carter on February 9, 1860 in Morgan Co., Indiana. On August 30, 1861 he enlisted in the 33rd Indiana infantry at Indianapolis. He was mustered into Company A with the rank of Corporal. He was discharged on September 13, 1864 at Atlanta, Georgia at the expiration of his enlistment. The 33rd Indiana infantry was known as the "Wildcats" from their first taste of battle at Wild Cat, Kentucky. The regiment also saw service at Cumberland Gap, Thompson's Station, Culp's Farm, Peach Tree Creek, and the Battles for Atlanta and Savannah.
