An enjoyable surprise birthday party was held at the home of Mrs. Mamie B. Summers, 103 South Market Street, Sunday, in honor of the 83rd birthday of her father, Joseph E. Carter. Mr. Carter has eight living children, 38 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. A dinner was served to the following; Joseph Carter, Mrs. Mamie Summers, of Frederick; Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Carter, Mrs. Laurence Carter, and Mrs. Florence Davison, of Hyattsville; Mrs. Mae Lowe, of Washington, D.C.; Mr. and Mrs. William Pickett, of Winfield; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Carter, Mr. and Mrs. James K. Redmond, Jacob Summers, Mrs. Catherine Frith, all of Frederick; Misses Dorothy Summers, of Winfield; Mary and Patricia Ann Summers and Shirley Ann Redmond, of Frederick; Master Robert Reid, Jr., of Thurmont; James Redmond, Jr. Charles Fogle, of Frederick. Mr. [Carter] received many presents.

The funeral of the late Joseph E. Carter, who died suddenly at his home on South Market street Saturday evening, took place Tuesday afternoon with a short service at the funeral home, 8 East Patrick street, at 1 o'clock. Further services were held in Monocacy cemetery Chapel at Beallsville at 2 o'clock in charge of Rev. Ralph E. Shober, pastor of the Church of the Brethren, Frederick. Three vocal selections, "Abide With Me," "Asleep in Jesus,",and "Nearer My God to Thee," were rendered by a duo, composed of Mrs. Roy E. Weatherman and Miss Myrtle Slifer. The floral offerings were very handsome. Casketbearers, all grandsons of the deceased were Charles Carter, James Carter, William Pickett, Curry Joseph Carter, William Johnson, and Stanley Carter. Interment was made in Monocacy Cemetery at Beallsville. C. E. Cline & Son, funeral directors.
