Billy Allen McConnell, 73, of Mooresville, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, following a lenthy illness with pulmonary fibrosis. Born Aug. 2, 1931 in Mooresville to the late Abner Linnie and Lillie Jane Sigmon McConnell, he attended Mooresville City Schools and, after graduating in 1949, joined the U.S. Air Force. He served as an instructor at the Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics School in Wichita Falls, Texas.

He spent the year of 1952 in Korea serving as an aircraft crew chief with the 336th Fighter Interceptor Squadron of the 4th Fighter Group. He was discharged in December 1952 and, in 1953, went to work for the North Carolina Air National Guard as an air technician. He worked for the guard for 11 years as a mechanic and flight engineer rising to the rank of master sergeant.

In 1954 he went to work for Remington Rand UNIVAC as a computer technician. He worked there as a systems specialist through several mergers and name changes until his retirement in December 1989 from UNISYS.

Mr. McConnell was active in the music program at his church, St. Andrews United Methodist Church, where he was a choir member and musician and was honored for his years of service to the music program by having the music suite named in his honor. He played trombone in various brass groups, including with the brass at The Little Church on the Lane and with the Reflection Big Band in Monroe.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Virginia ann Brooks McConnell, whom he married on Aug. 22, 1951. Also surviving are a daughter, Janet E. McConnell of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, Michael D. McConnell of Charlotte; a brother, Joel P. McConnell; three sisters, Vera Henderson, Anne Kerr and Martha Westmoreland, all of Mooresville; three grandchildren, Amber Thomas of Charleston, S.C., Lily Collins of Tempe, Ariz., and Rachel McConnell Spease; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Mabel Robertson and Rachel McConnell; and a brother, John McConnell.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 2 at Glenwood Memorial Park. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Charlotte with Rev. Dr. Gary Royals officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Neill Funeral Home in Mooresville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the St. Andrews United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1900 Emerywood Drive, Charlotte, NC 28210. MOORESVILLE TRIBUNE WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2004

He was born in Mooresville on September 2, 1956, son of the late Billy McConnell and mother Ann B. McConnell of Mooresville. He was a field technician for an office equipment company. He is survived by his wife, Emma Hamrick McConnell; daughter, Rachel McConnell of Richmond, KY; step-daughter, Jessica Smith; sister, Janet McConnell of Atlanta, GA; and four grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 5 at Glenwood Memorial Park, Mooresville, with Rev. Joanne Hull officiating.
