ROBERTS

Mrs. Ellen Roberts, daughter of John F. and Johanna Johnson, was born on a farm near Oakley, Lucas County, Iowa on Jan. 8, 1893. Ellen passed away Dec. 20, 1981 at the Chariton Manor where she had been a resident for the past 15 months.

Mrs. Roberts received her education in the rural schools of Lucas County.

On July 26, 1913, she married Ora Roberts and to this union were born four daughters.

Survivors are her daughters, Erlene and husband, Francis Thomas; Lorraine and husband, Lloyd Worrell; Joanne and husband, Dale Gale; and Bonnie Luke. Also four grandchildren, Dick Luke and wife Carol, Larry Luke and wife Judy, Cathy and Cristi Gale and six great-grandchildren, Mike Luke and wife Robin, Cindy and Scott Luke, Debbie, Tim and Mark Luke, and one great-great-granddaughter, Sarah.

Preceding her in death were her parents, two brothers, two sisters, her husband, Ora, and great-grandson, Jim Luke.

Most of her married life was spent on farms near Oakley until 1931 when they moved to Chariton to continue operating the garbage business which was started in 1924.

She has been a lifetime member of the First Lutheran Church, being confirmed on July 7, 1908 and was active in church work.

She was a devoted wife and mother to her family. She was noted as a provider of many good meals and love to many relatives and friends. On Sundays the whole family would gather at her house and she delighted in preparing all kinds of delicious food that filled a big table. Everyone was always made to feel welcome and comfortable.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1981, at the Fielding Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gregory N. Davis and the Rev. Ronald Stein conducting. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery.
