Matilda was blessed 20 Mar 1859 in the Birmingham, Worwickshire, England Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by John Lines an Elder in the church. (film # 86981 LDS Branch Records Birmingham, Warwickshire, England).Matilda is listed in the 1861 England Census as the 2 year old daughter of Joseph and Ann Howard.

On the 3 Jun 1864, when she was six years old, she left England with her parents and eight brothers and sisters and sailed to America on the ship "Hudson". Her parents and older brothers and sisters had been baptized members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and wanted to join the Saints in Utah. Two brothers, Thomas & William had left England and came to America 1861 to help earn money for the rest of the family to follow when they could. The rest of the family followed in 1864. They arrived in New York City, 19 Jul 1864 after spending a month and sixteen days on the water. They travelled by trains and river boats by way of Albany, New York, Buffalo, New York, Chicago, Illinois, Quincy, Illinois, St Joseph, Missouri to Wyoming, Nebraska. This was Civil War time and there was burned bridges and torn up railroads they had to deal with. From Wyoming, Nebraska,
On 2 Aug 1864 they began their journey westward across the great plains, with ox teams in the William Hyde Company.
Matilda became sick with what was called "mountain fever" and died 20 Aug 1864, just eighteen days on the trail. She was buried without a coffin in a unmarked grave. Her three year old sister, Tamar, died of the same illness just ten days earlier. Her mother also died before they reached Salt Lake on 8 Oct 1864.
