Tom was a wonderful man, with a warm smile and a great sense of humor. He was a devoted husband, well-loved by his family and didn't know a stranger; he made friends everywhere he went. Thomas was a World War II Veteran and a P.O.W. He worked for 74 years, as a machinist and most recently retired at 90 years of age from Union Hill School District, where he loved his job as a custodian working with children for 24 years. He was an amazing gardener, sharp poker player, and an avid Giants and Raiders fan.
Tom is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Bernice Alice Vieira, and their three children; Thomas Vieira Jr., David Vieira (deceased), and Judith Mellow; daughter-in-laws Penny Vieira, Vickie Prechter, and Monica Frohreich, and eleven grandchildren; Aron Vieira, Erick Vieira, Beverly Vieira Wilson (deceased), Thomas Vieira IV, Lance Vieira, Ali Metzler, Megan Graham, Jamie Vieira, Daniel Vieira, Zena Mello, Logan Mello, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
Tom was the eldest child of Emma Machado Vieira and Tom Antonio Vieira who immigrated from the Portuguese Azore Islands. He is survived by sister Elvira Seela and half-siblings Annie Fimby, Mary Sinclair, and Thomas Sinclair Jr. He was raised in Oakland, Calif., and attended Castlemont High School. Tom and Bernice raised their family in Castro Valley, Calif., then moved to Grass Valley, Calif., where they loved for 30 years. They most recently resided in Auburn, Calif.
