She was one of the many children of John J. Van Deusen and Fytje (Sophia) Hallenbeck. She married at the Dutch Reformed Church of Claverack, Columbia County, New York Leonard Freeland who had been born in Massachusetts of Scotch and English ancestors. Maria was only seventeen at the time but she appears to have made a good choice. My ancestor, John Augustus Freeland, Sr. was born in 1807. John married Eliza C. Bryan at St. Paul's Episcopal Chapel in Manhattan, New York in 1844. Eliza was about sixteen years younger than her first husband, John. They had two children - Helena and John, Jr. The youngest child of Leonard and Maria was Mary Mellen Freeland who married Peter Bogardus about 1847. Mary was born about 1827 and she had one son - Leonard Freeland Bogardus - and three daughters - Emma, Little Mary, and Grace Freeland Bogardus born in 1868 a few months after the death of her father Peter Bogardus. Peter was treasurer of Columbia County at the time of his death which was reported in the New York Times.

Two other children of Maria and Leonard were Sophia Maria Freeland who died in her twenties and Sally Freeland who married Peter Snyder. Sophia Maria Freeland, who died in 1838, is buried in the churchyard of the Dutch Reformed Church of Claverack, New York next to her uncle Aaron Gifford (husband of Sophia Freeland) who died in 1837. Fortunately Aaron Gifford was very well-to-do and left a will that named his brother-in-law Leonard Freeland as executor along with Aaron's wife Sophia Freeland. This will is the strongest evidence that I have of who Leonard's ancestors were.
