Lawson was born to Solomon and Jane Pennington Baker June 17, 1875 at Blue Ridge, Collin, Co., Texas.
He was the grandson of Caleb Baker who came to Texas from Arkansas during the Civil War because two of his sons had been sent to a Confederate Army Camp in Houston Co. Texas. He was also the grandson of Richard and Mary "Polly" Walling Pennington who migrated to Houston Co., in 1839 when it was still a Republic from White Co., Tennessee
