The Evening Republican
Columbus, Indiana
Friday, Sept. 24, 1886
John W. Drake, who has been seriously ill for several weeks, died at his home near the city on the Hartsville pike yesterday evening. Mr. Drake has been peculiarly affected with abscesses for perhaps ten years. Though a man of large frame, he had wasted to almost a skeleton, and has suffered untold pain. He formerly lived on a farm near St. Louis Crossing where he was prosperous. It is said, but perhaps without foundation, that the numerous abscesses from which he suffered and which caused his death, were caused by poisoned virus used in vaccinating him. He was quite well-off in this world's goods and was highly respected. His age was fifty-five. His funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon at two o clock, Revs. Sweeney and Tevis officiating.
