US Congressman, Mayor of Clifton, Attorney. Born in Clifton, Hamilton County, Ohio, he was educated at the public schools of Cincinnati. He left school in 1884 to apprentice as a machinist in a shipyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania while studying law. He returned to Cincinnati in 1886 and graduated from the Cincinnati Law School in 1889. Bowdle was admitted to the bar later that year and practiced as an attorney in Hamilton County. In 1896, he moved west and briefly lived in Colorado before seeking residency in Mexico for three years. In 1900, he returned to Cincinnati and continued his law practice. He was a member of the Ohio State Constitutional Convention in 1912 and was elected to represent Ohio's 1st District in the United States House of Representatives from 1913 to 1915. Bowdle was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1914 and 1916 and became the Mayor of Clifton. He was killed in an accident in 1919 when he was struck by an automobile after exiting a streetcar. His death occurred in Cincinnati when he was 51 years old. His great-grandfather, Henry Bowdle, Jr., was a Revolutionary War veteran. His cousin, Thomas Lawrence Eyre, was a Pennsylvania politician.
