ELLA will always be remembered by this author as an example of the hardworking Iowa farm wife of the 1930s and 1940s. During that time, nothing was easy. Not the chores on the farm, the laundry and mending, the care of the kids or sharing work with her husband. In summers when I stayed on the farm with cousins Ellen Jane, Ruby and Nancy (who was my age), I don't recall ever hearing a complaint. She led the way to the windmill down the road to where the mistletoe grew best for collecting at Christmas season. She saw that I got washed up after Nancy and I would explore the muddy little creek bottom looking for clay we could mold and play with. And those special nights when she would pop a big batch of corn that she had tended in the field as a treat for all of us.

Today, I award her 3 gold stars for surviving the depression era hardships and raising her 3 daughters to have successful lives.
