Mrs. Martha Jane Weiker, 84. one of the old pioneers of Fremont and Sandusky County, residing on the east side of the city for more than 50 years, died Sunday morning at 1 o'clock, in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sarah Willey, 725 Fourth street, of complications, which confined her to her bed the last couple of weeks, Her heart was affected, and, although she had been ailing a long time, she was able to be up and about until recently. She was the widow of the late well-known Philip Weiker.
The body was prepared for burial at the Willey home by the Schwartz-Eagon morticians, and it will be kept there until the funeral, which will be held at the A. M. E. church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. J. D. White and burial will be made In Oakwood cemetery at the side of her husband in the family lot.
Mrs. Weiker was born In Newburn, North Carolina, July 1, 1848, and she came here with her parent when she was 12 years of age, they settling first in Elmore and later moving to Fremont. At the time of her coming north, 60 colored families migrated to this section and Mrs. Weiker is the last of these people.
She was united in marriage in Fremont with Philip Weiker in 1874. He preceded her in death a number of years ago. To them were born 10 children, four of whom also preceded her to the grave. She leaves to mourn her death Mrs., Cassie Cooper, of Dundee, Mich.; Mrs. Clara Dixon, Mrs. Sarah Willey, Thomas and Charles, of Fremont, and Walter Weiker, of Cleveland. There are also 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, besides many other relatives and a host of friends. In addition to her own 10 children, Mrs. Weiker took into her home and reared two other children, Benny Parish and George Campbell. She was a kind and loving wife and mother and always a good neighbor.
A member of the A. M. E, church on Second street for 60 years, Mrs. Weiker was very devoted and always took an active part in church work, doing her full share, even when in her ailing condition. She was an honorary member of the missionary society.
Mrs. Weiker had two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Anna Quinn. of Oberlin, Mrs. Mary Morgan, of Fremont, and Oliver Dudley, of Elmore, all of whom have passed away. She was well known in Fremont and always commanded the highest respect of all who knew her. Her family will have the sympathy of their many friends in her death.
