Miss Burns was born on November 24, 1887, at Womer, Kansas, the daughter of Theodore Scott Burns and Mary Ann Armitstead and seventh of 10 children. She worked as an
assistant editor of the Rich Hill, Missouri, newspaper for a time. After her father, a Civil War veteran died in 1914, she and her family moved to Lewiston, Idaho, to join a sister and her brother Lawrence, who had settled in Lewiston. Miss Burns attended Warrensburg State College (University of Central Missouri) and reportedly graduated from Lewiston State Normal School (The Microcosm, 1918). She began teaching 7th and 8th grades at Lewiston Orchards School in 1916 and became principal in 1919. After leaving Lewiston in 1924, Miss Burns graduated from Columbia University and married Frank W. Simmonds on June 8, 1927, in New York City. Mr. Simmons was Lewiston's uperintendent of schools from 1913-1920 and would later be senior deputy manager of the American Bankers Association. She served as the assistant director of the prestigious Bentley School in Manhattan. Mrs. Simmonds died on April 30, 1938, in Tarrytown, New York, at age 50, after an illness of
several weeks. She was survived by her husband and three step-daughters. Her mother and eight of her brothers and sisters were still living in the Lewiston area at the time of her death.
