He was born on Coon's Run, Harrison Co., West Virginia (formerly Virginia) in 1775 and was the son of Coonrod Coon and Anne Elizabeth Barbara Stauffer.

He married Elizabeth Snider April 28, 1795 in Harrison Co., West Virginia (formerly Virginia). From the census records, it is likely that he was the father of about 11 children.

Probable children: Abraham 1796, Phoebe Hurley 1800, Coonrod S. 1803, son 1805, daughter 1807, Mark 1809, Jacob 1810, Sarah Prunty 1811, Mariah Earls 1811, John 1814, Daniel 1815/1819, Ruth Tutterow 1822. (This section needs reviewed; but I think we can say for sure that Daniel and Ruth were his children.)

Around 1834 or a few years before he migrated to Henry Co., Indiana. Around 1846 he migrated with his son Daniel and daughter Ruth to Jackson Twp., Brown co., Indiana. He likely died sometime between 1850 and 1860 and is likely buried near where he lived. He resided on Lick Creek Rd in northern Jackson Twp.

Note: he didn't die in 1812. That is an error in other trees that keeps getting replicated.

There are several possibilities for his burial place. Mt. Zion Cemetery near Mahalasville. Or he could be buried on the back lot of where he lived. Carmel Ridge Cemetery is another possibility. There is a small old pioneer cemetery near the intersection of Carmel Ridge Road and Richards Rd. It is an unmarked cemetery and no one knows who is buried there. Another possibility is the Fleener/Coon Cemetery. His son Daniel later lived in Fountain County and Joseph could have went with him. But, it is more likely that he is buried in Jackson Twp., Brown Co. though.

Further research has revealed the existence of at least four distinct Joseph Coons who lived in the Harrison Co., VA (WV) area in the 1790's.

#1 - Joseph Coon (1720-1798) m. Catherine Cunread/Conrad. Any records after 1798 do not pertain to this Joseph. He had many children including Joseph Jr.

#2 Joseph Jr. b. 1752, died 1830/1832 in Ogden, Genesee Co., NY. He supposedly married Elizabeth Hunt Daniels on 1795 in Marion Co., VA (WV). This Joseph married second to Sarah "Sallie" Brown on July 26, 1798, Harrison Co., VA (WV). Given his birth date of 1752, it seems probable that he was first married in the 1770's to an unknown wife who may have died in the 1790's. More research is needed.

#3 Joseph married Elizabeth Snider Apr. 28, 1795, Harrison Co., VA (WV). He was the son of Coonrod Coon and Anne Barbara Stauffer. This one is my ancestor. He likely died in Jackson Twp., Brown Co., IN in the 1850's. Note: he did not die in 1812 that is an error in other trees that keeps getting replicated.

#4 Joseph b. ca. 1762 or perhaps 1780 married Elizabeth Stackhouse Jan. 17, 1800 also in Harrison Co. No death date has been found but this one is believed to have settled in Monroe Co. or possibly Belmont Co., Ohio which is where Elizabeth's father lived. Elizabeth was the daughter of Isaac and Bethia Stackhouse. Isaac was born 1751 and died May 1, 1838 Monroe Co., OH. To be sure, there are Coons and Stackhouses listed in the records of these two counties. It appears that these Coons stayed in this area and are a separate branch from the ones in Indiana.

If Joseph #4 was born around 1762 then perhaps the son of the first Phillip b. ca. 1700 and his last wife. If he was born around 1780 then he may have been the son of Joseph Coon Jr. and his first wife whose name is unknown. Thus, we would have been Joseph III. He also could have been the son of Philip Coon (1757-1842) and Sarah Scott.

As to my own DNA results, out of over 4800 matches, there's only one matching person with a Stackhouse in their tree and that person could be connected some other way. I have over 50 matches to the various spellings of Snider/Snyder/Schneider. So, based on everything that has been found thus far it appears that the Elizabeth listed on the 1850 Census of Brown Co., IN was Elizabeth Snider Coon. To be sure, I think we can rule out Joseph Jr. who moved to NY. All of this deserves more research. Also, there were Sniders living in Hancock Co. and Henry Co., IN where Joseph Coon settled in the 1830's. But, it is unknown how or if they connect.
