Alexander was born on the farm "Tagharina" in Northern Ireland and immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1881 when he was 18. The family homesteaded near Brandon, Manitoba for about 4 years, then sold their property and moved to Oregon.

Alexander and Clarissa were married in Portland on August 6, 1890. Their children were: William Keyes, Mary Catherine, Marshall Jeffrey, John Alexander and Norman Gatton.
