Aunt Martha was a spinster when she married an older man, a Mr. Stone - I believe his name was Jarvis. He was a widower with two sons, Charles and Jeremiah who was called Jerry. Their home was in Astoria and Mr. Stone died after a few years.

Later, Aunt Martha married a man named Lewis. They lived in Clatsop Co. a while, then moved north to Blaine (near the Canadian border) and there they had what Aunt Martha called a “stopping house”, a place where travelers could stop and get a bed and good home-cooked food. She was a very good cook.

After a few years Mr. Lewis departed and left her to fend for herself. She left Blaine and went to Vancouver, B.C. where she lived in Lynn Valley several years. Uncle Bill McClure, her younger brother, lived with her for awhile.

She finally came back to Oregon and lived most of the time with Aunt Kate. When Aunt Maggie passed away in 1925, Aunt Martha went to Lincoln County [to help care for her Longden nephews and niece].

From Reminiscences of Mary Catherine (McClure) Toelle.

Portland Oregonian, June 2, 1945, page 9 column 8:
