Catharine was the daughter of Alexander Jeffery (or Jeffrey) and Martha Smith, who lived on the farm Tagharina in the hills, within sight of Londonderry in Northern Ireland. Her precise birth date is not known, but there is a sampler which she made as a girl, which reads "Catharine Jeffery,s Sampler Wrought in October 28th, 1846, Aged 15 years".

She was married to James McClure at 1st Glendermot Meeting house in the parish of Glendermot, on July 24, 1856. James was born in about 1819 and was the son of Richard McClure and Jane Buchanan. James and Catharine lived at Tagharina, and had nine children.

In 1881 James and Catharine immigrated to Canada. They had eight children at that time, aged 22 to 6. They landed at Quebec on May 8, 1881 in the ship Parisian. That summer Catharine and her sons homesteaded 3 plots in the prairie several miles south of Brandon, Manitoba. The father, James, seems to have died on the trip from Quebec to Manitoba. His burial place is unknown.

According to family lore, their experience in Manitoba was a miserable one - one daughter died of consumption - and after about four years, at the earliest possible date, they proved their homesteads, sold them, and came to Oregon.

The children of Catharine and James were all born in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. In addition to the children linked below there was a son Robert born December 22, 1869, who died as an infant in Ireland.

Catharine was buried in this cemetery according to her granddaughter Mary Catherine (McClure) Toelle. There is no known gravestone or cemetery record for her.
