ALDERMAN : Mr. Alonzo Floyd Alderman
Mr. Alonzo Floyd Alderman, just 6 days away from his 92nd birthday, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at his residence.

Mr. Alderman was a native of Bulloch County, and had lived in Effingham County for more than 60 years. He was a World War II veteran, having served with the U.S. Army as a staff Sergeant in 7 nations in support of the 8th Army and the 9th Air Force. He retired in 1980 as Warehouse Manager from Semmes Hardware in Savannah, after more than 40 years of service.

Mr. Alderman was recognized in 2000 with his wife, Naomi Shearouse Alderman, with Effingham's John Adam Treutlen Award for Community Service. He served on the Effingham County Commission from 1980 to 1986. During that period, he worked tirelessly on behalf of senior citizens, leading the effort to secure property for the County's Senior Citizens Center at Springfield (which bore his name for many years), and was instrumental in the creation of the efforts of the Effingham Association for Developmental Services to create a school for the developmentally handicapped and the decision of the Fort Howard Company to locate a major plant in the county.

He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Central Area Planning and Development Commission in 1982-86. He was also active with the Coastal Georgia Regional Development Center's Area Agency on Aging, and served as Chair of its Aging Services Advisory Council in 1991-93.

He was vitally involved in veterans' issues and organizations, helping to organize American Legion Post 209 in Springfield, and giving it 52 years of service, including 30 as Commander. He served several terms as District Commander in the 1st District as finance officer for more than 20 years, and was Departmental Commander for the state of Georgia in 1983-84. He was a member of Voiture 567 of the Society of 40 & 8, and served many years in top leadership at the local and state levels, including several terms as Chef de Gare. He was similarly active with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and served as local and state commander for that organization.

He received a Meritorious Service Award in 1972 from the Selective Service System for his 25 years of service, and the Cross of Military Service in 1964 from the Effingham Hussars Unit of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. For many years, he voluntarily transported disabled and needy veterans to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta for medical care.

He was an early organizer of the Effingham County Fair, was deeply involved in obtaining the land for the fair's present site near Springfield, and served as Fair Manager for more than 40 years. He was also an active volunteer with Meals-on-Wheels, the March of Dimes, and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Naomi Shearouse Alderman of Rincon; daughter and son-in-law, Penelope A. and John D. Scarpucci of Atlanta; son and daughter-in-law, Barton and Joyce Alderman of Springfield; sister, Allie Jean Feaster of Vallejo, California; brother, William Michael (Mike) Alderman of Blackshear; and a number of nieces and nephews.
