Mother of 14 children, three of which died in childhood. widowed with five minor children still at home, she cleaned banks and offices to help support them. She was a determined woman not afraid to stand up for herself, but also not beyond threatening to run away if she didn't get her own way. I remeber her as a grouchy old woman , but became more understanding as an adult I realized that she had to be determined to survive. She loved to play Monoply and the song "Buffalo Gal." It was one of my favorites too, but I called it "Dance with a Dolly with a Hole in Her Stocking."Mother of 14 children, three of which died in childhood. Widowed while five minor children were still at home, she cleaned banks and other places to help support them.

Her mother died while she was very young and by age 11 she was living with another family, working for her keep. By 16 she married.

When the Interurban street car was installed in Chesterton, she took her children to Valpo, so they could experience riding a street car.

She was a determined woman, not afraid to stand up for herself. She loved playing Monopoly and often played until late in the night. She loved the songs "Buffalo Gal" and "Red Wing" She could also be a pill, threatening to run away if she didn't get her own way.

My grandmother, Mable could "see" things or what Lulu called forcasting. Lulu hated it she called it the devils work.

When Dorothy died, Lulu wrote in the Bible, "Burried Dorothy today. The sun was shinng." this has always grabbed me.

I remember her as a gruff old lady, but as an adult I realized she had to be that way to survive.
