U.S. Congressman. Born in Montpelier, Vermont, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1845, moved to Plover, Wisconsin and commenced the practice of law. He was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, (1852-53) and judge of the circuit court, (1854-75). In 1875, he elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth Congress, serving until 1877. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, until his death at age 79.
