John Baker Williams was one of ten children born to Samuel Wallace Williams and Mae A Baker Williams. He was raised in San Saba, Texas. Baker was a descendant of prominent San Saba County,Texas families. Several of these family members fought with Sam Houston in the Army of the Republic of Texas at the Battle of San Jacinto, when Texas won it's independence from Mexico.

He was a veteran of World War I and was a barber by trade. He spent several years living in Dallas, Texas, but lived his last years at Kermit, Texas. He died in the Veteran's Hospital at Big Spring, Texas.
