Revolutionary War Veteran, also spelled Frey or Frye. DAR #A043089. Fry served in the German Battalion commanded by Col. Nicholas Hussecker (Hausegger) authorized by Congress in May 1776; Fry served in Capt. Henry Fister's Company, and also in Capt. Philip Graybill's Company (Kraehenbuehl), recruited by Capt. Lohra, as part of the Maryland Line, Continental Army.

He is believed to be buried in the New Valley Baptist Cemetery, where his wife Margaret Ansel Fry is known to be buried.
∼BIRTH: His Pension file says he was born Dec 1746. Nicholas was born 30 Oct 1746 in Frederick Co, MD per several SAR/DAR records but son Martin's 1880 census says his father was born in VA although it appears that Nicholas' presumed father Jacob Frey 1711-1785 came to the US in 1754 from Germany. SAR application for Franklin W. Harper says he was born Dec. 1746 which matches the age given in his pension. Consistent with the early censuses.

Maryland Marriages 1634-1777 (It is not certain if this is the same Nicholas who married the two Margarets because the pension says the 2nd Margaret was the 2nd wife. It could be an error in the pension if Nicholas had no kids by Catherine or she died shortly after the marriage and never talked about). There are other Nicholas' around the area.

OBIT: Died: In Leesburg, on Monday evening the 23d inst. Mr. Nicholas Fry, a Soldier of the Army of the Revolution and Pensioner of the United States. Mr. Fry had attained to the very advanced age of ninety five years, and until within a few weeks of his death was able to walk out and visit his friends. For several years past he has been a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and exemplified in his life the character of the humble Christian. In the pension file of Nicholas Fry he reported that he attended the baggage wagons at the Battle of Brandywine. Nicholas as he was known was a waggonmaker by trade. And Nicholas would have been one of the Soldiers with Washington crossing the delaware in the famous portrait of Washington.

PENSION: From Pension File #W1591 - May 5 1818 Nicholas Frey says he is 71 years old completed application. Nov. 8 1819 Nicholas Frey aged 73 years gave further deposition. Aug 17 1820 Nicholas Fry says he is 73 years 9 months old and was a Waggonmaker. He says at this time he has a wife age 52 and 7 children under 18 - 1 Dorothea age 18, Sally 15, Joseph 13, Samuel 12, Leonard and Martin (twins) 7, and Rosanna 6. He signed his mark. Gives marriage bond in file to Nichs Frye and Margt Ansel spinster of Shelbourne Parish bond dated Mar 11 1794 Loudoun. Copy from Loudoun Co Clerk Oct 19 1848. Oct 7 1848 widow Margaret Fry age upwards of 80 years applies as widow of Nicholas Fry stating that Nicholas Fry died on 23 day of March 1840 and that she was married to him prior to the 2nd of January 1800. She signed her mark. June13, 1849 David Mayn states Nicholas Fry her husband who was a pensioner of Loudoun Co VA had a family in the year 1820 as some of his children by his second wife were young at that time…. his second wife is the present widow who now claims was married to Nicholas Fry (the children under 18 were named with ages). Jun 18 1849 Margaret states she was married on March 11 1794 and her husband died March 23 1840. Nicholas' pension papers state that he served as a private in the Houtsegar Regiment for 2 years. He said he joined in 1776 in Fredericktown, MD under Capt. Henry Fister of the German Regiment (one deposition says Capt. George Feister). He said he signed up for 3 years but was discharged in 1778 in MD after 2 years because he had been rendered incapable of service by a l/ceminip (?) in his right leg which he was still afflicted with since the service. He said he was a waggonmaker by trade and had attended the baggage waggons during the Battle of Brandywine (Sep 1777). He said he had a discharge certificate from Lt. John Battzell dated may 2 1818 saying Nicholas Frey had served under Capt. Henry Fester in the German Regiment. He said the regiment was under the command of Col. Honsekor in one deposition and under Col. Hansaaka and Col. Stricker in another deposition. He stated that he had rheumatism and other infirmities of age and has received assistance from the parish because of an accident by which his leg was broken.

NOTES: Order books Nicholas Fry OB11 - 239 References a claim for husband's benefits by Margaret Fry "a resident of this county" ..."the widow of Nicholas Fry who was a Revolutionary War Soldier..".."married to him 11 day of March 1794."
