E Hartpence Rites Set on Tuesday
Willis Everett Hartpence, 407 North second street, died Sunday morning after an extended illness in the Sayre hospital. Services will be held Tuesday, at 2:30 p.m. in the First Christian church with Rev. Frank Scofield officiating.
Born July 17, 1896 at Mt. Gilead, Ohio, Mr. Hartpence moved in 1914 to the Mayfield community with his parents from Ohio and lived in Perkins, Oklahoma from 1920 to 1925. He attended A and M college, Stillwater. He returned to Sayre and was employed at the Bill McAnery Ford Company 1926.
In 1927 he was employed by the Jim Lowery Dodge Company. From 1928 to 1955 he was associated with the Conoco Oil Company. In 1955 he became an independent oil distributor and retired in 1959. He served in World War I. A past deacon of the First Christian church, he served as board chairman several times. He was charter member of the Perkins American Legion, a past member of the Sayre American Legion, member of the Masonic Lodge, having received a 25 year pen, past commander of Knight's Temple, past member of the Kiwanis Club.
He served as president of the chamber of commerce two years and on the Sayre school board 26 years, serving as president two years. He became a member of the Methodist church at the age of 11 and in 1935 became a member of the First Christian church, Sayre.
He was married in 1917 to Gladys Martin in Mayfield and they have made their home in Sayre since 1925.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, four brothers and one sister.
Survivors are his wife of the home; three sons, Glen and Wayne, both of Sayre, Gene of Oklahoma City; eight grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Merle Leonard, Columbus, Ohio.
Interment will be in the Sayre-Doxey cemetery with Rose Chapel funeral home in charge of arrangements.
