Minnie L Stone Austin (she said she had no middle name, just an initial) was the 5th of seven children of John Edward Stone, Sr and Atje Leistra Stone. Born in Richmond, Va 1902 she passed at Lucy Corr Nursing home (where she had resided for 6 months for health issues) in 1988 at the age of 86. (She had stated she wanted to live to be as old as her maternal Grandmother, Trijntje "Katherine" Jacobs DeJong Leistra Zuidema, who passed at 85). On the 1910 census she is living with her parents and siblings in the Manchester District, Swansboro Suburb, Hull Street, Richmond, Va and was in school. By the 1920 census she is living with her parents and 3 siblings on Hull St, completed the 7th grade and now working as a Packer in a Tobacco factory. (I believe she started there at 14 years old and said she came home sick every day from the smells.) She married Herman Austin, Sr on Nov 13, 1922 in Richmond, VA, age 20, and went by boat to Baltimore, MD on their honeymoon. (She stated she was seasick from the time she stepped on the boat until she got off.) On the 1930 Census Minnie and Herman are living in the Manchester District on Decatur Street, Richmond, Va and have a daughter, Virginia Mae, and son, Herman, Jr. She is a homemaker and mother now. Around 1938 they bought property and build a home at the corner of Midlothian Turnpike and Ruthers Road, Chesterfield County, VA. In the 1940 census they are on Ruthers Rd and have both children living with them. During the next years they sold parts of their property for neighbors (and their daughter) to build on and in the late 1950's sold their home and corner lot to a commercial developer which became 60 West Shopping Center and an early Ukrops was built there. At this time they built again further down Ruthers Rd on part of their remaining property and next door to their daughter. Herman preceded her in death in 1964, at their home, after a long battle with lung cancer. Minnie was also predeceased by all her siblings, Rowleen Stone Ragland, Thomas William Stone, Sr (1895-1955), Cora Lee Stone Culley (1897-1975), Virginia Stone Jackson, James Coley Stone and Bonnie Colton Stone and 2 half siblings, Blossie Stone and John Edward Stone, Jr . Surviving her were her children, Virginia Mae Austin Anderson (Ben), and Herman Austin, Jr (Florence). She was also survived by 6 grandchildren, Bruce Reed Anderson (Carol Sue), Carol Ann Anderson Norman (Bobby), Dianne Lynn Austin Rust (Craig), Keith Austin Anderson (Martha), Jane Marie Austin Waddell (Greg) and Gary Wayne Austin (Beverly).
