ANDERSON, Virginia Mae Austin, was born October 13, 1923 to Minnie and Herman Austin Sr. On June 30, 2016, at the age of 92, the Lord came, took her hand and gently led her home. We know she was greeted with much love and hugs by her husband of 64 years, her sweetheart, Benjiman William Anderson, her loving parents; and her beloved "Brother," Herman Austin Jr. She left behind with wonderful memories her favorite first born, Bruce (Carol Sue), her favorite youngest, Keith (Martha); and her favorite daughter, Carol Ann Norman (Bobby); seven loving grandchildren, Eric, Nicole, Todd, Julie, Lisa, Austin and Will; six beautiful great-granddaughters, Rachel, Victoria, Madeline, Elizabeth, Harper and Reagan; her sweet sister-in-law, Louise Anderson Berger; and many special nieces and nephews. We will greatly miss her loving nature, potato salad, and deviled eggs. Virginia was a lifelong resident of Richmond, Va. (Chesterfield County). She was a graduate of Manchester High School (1942) and attended her 73rd class reunion with her best friend of 75 years, Frances Driskill. Joining Providence United Methodist Church in 1940 she met her future husband, Ben, her country boy. Virginia loved music. Into her 90s she still played a steel guitar "Hawaiian Style" given to her by her Daddy at age 11. She loved to dance and in 1943 danced the night away to the tunes of the Glenn Miller Orchestra in New York. During WWII she was a member of the USO and loved to Jitterbug. In 1946, she married her Ben and became a stay at home Mama for 14 years. Virginia began the next stage of her life working for C&P Credit Union, retiring with 25 years of service. A member of The American Iris Society, she grew and sold over 150 varieties, and never lost her love for this beautiful flower. Ben and Virginia shared a passion for travel, whether with the Telephone Pioneers of America, Providence Retirees Club, friends, family or just the two of them, they loved to go. They vacationed in all 50 states, Canada, Panama, Switzerland, Germany and Italy, they never saw enough. Buggs Island Lake was always their favorite and became their 2nd home with their family still enjoying time there. In her later, quieter years, Virginia loved spending time in the Colonial Triangle with her daughter and granddaughters, Nicole and Lisa. She loved museums, plays, and singing while riding. Her priorities in life were always family, food and fun. Her legacy lives in the family they raised and loved so dearly. She had no favorites- she loved all equally. She loved unconditionally, will be greatly missed, and we know she and Daddy are watching over us until we meet again in Heaven with a beautiful view of their lake. A memorial ceremony will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2016, at Providence United Methodist Church, 901 South Providence Rd., Richmond, Va. 23236. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Providence UMC, in her name.
