Asa was the first-born child of Benjamin Smith and Lois Chase. He was born in the fall after they arrived in the Bethel area. He married Unity Richmond and only had one child, daughter Lois who never married. Asa worked on the farm with his father until his father died and Asa took over the duties, taking care of his mother until her death. (This information was found on pages 46 & 47 in a pamphlet entitled "Bethel" published by the Bethel Historical Society, Bethel, VT; 1895, reprinted in 2001.)
