Lois was the second daughter born to Dudley Chase and Alice Corbett. Her family moved from Massachusetts at some point to Cornish, NH where she met and married Benjamin Smith who had recently served in the Revolutionary War. After their marriage on 9 Dec 1779, they left in the spring for Bethel, VT where her father had purchased some tracts of land, still considered wilderness. Her father split up the land into 3 farms and Benjamin and Lois got one of them. Her sister Alice and brother Simeon got the other two. Lois's father was very concerned for their safety as there were several serious Indian uprisings during this time. A month before their first child Asa was born in Sept 1780, the town of Royalton, just 2 miles away, was burned by the Indians.

Lois and Benjamin had 12 children altogether, all born in Bethel. Lois's brother Ithama Chase was the father of Salmon P. Chase, who held many public offices. The last and most prestigious was as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, appointed by Abraham Lincoln.

Lois and Benjamin's 8th child, Ransford Smith, after serving in the War of 1812, moved with brother Addison to Kentucky. I descend from Ransford and 2nd wife Catherine Graves Howard's 5th of 9 children, Tryon Yancy Smith. See his grave in Princeton's Cedar Hill Cemetery.
