Roger came from a genteel family of Virginia planters. He was the son of Roger And Cary (Baker) Shackelford. Some list his birth year as 1756. However, I believe this to be erroneous given the fact that his first marriage to Nancy Ann Carter was in 1767. She was the daughter of Charles and Nancy (Byrd) Carter; she was a cousin of President William Henry Harrison. Roger served in the Revolutionary War as a Captain from 1779-1780. Later in life, Roger married Sally Laird and he became a part of the Shaker community around 1816. The surname is also spelled Shackleford.

Per Phyllis (Menna) Berker, Roger's father was Roger Lewis Shackelford, Sr. (1704 Gloucester Co., VA - 1780 King & Queen Co., VA) and his mother was Carey Caroline Baker (1715 Chemokine, King & Queen Co., VA - 1765 Virginia). They were married approx. 1735 in Gloucester Co., VA. Their first born son, John, was born 1736.

However, I have Roger Sr.'s birthplace as Essex Co., VA. Also, I am unsure if there are any actual records that show Lewis as the middle name of either Roger although it is possible. Most people of this era didn't have middle names. I think this name was added in error as some gedcoms simply add the mother's maiden name in as the son's middle name. This isn't the best practice. Roger Sr.'s parents were Francis Shackelford and Sarah Virginia Lewis.
