Joseph Frank Spence Jr., 79, of the 3000 block of Douglas Road, died April 13, 2002, at his home.
Born in Norfolk County, he was the son of the late Joseph F. Spence Sr. and Ruth Waller Spence. He was also predeceased by a brother, Leon Spence and sister, Margaret S. Halstead. Joe loved his work on the farm and provided collards to many people. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He will be missed by all.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mabel E. Spence; two daughters, Nancy E. Norcum and her husband, Joe, and Onita S. Pyle; and a son, Frank W. Spence and his wife, Rita, all of Chesapeake; eight sisters, Gladys Stewart and her husband, Lewis, Annie Overstreet, Doris Spence, Helen Stallings, Marion Mathias and husband Dick, Mary Jane Rich and husband Jimmy, Joyce Burket, Norma Wassman and husband Woody; two grandchildren, Denver J. and April M. Pyle; and two stepgrandchildren, Lee Edwards and Angie Slade.
The Rev. John Godfrey will conduct the funeral at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lake Drummond Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Lake Drummond Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge.
