Harley T. Burton, 76, of Clarendon, died October 9 from injuries received in a car accident at Abernathy. He and his wife were on their way to Midland to visit their daughter, when their car was hit broadside. Mrs. Burton, the driver, received minor injuries.

He and his wife, the former Clara Belew, were both born in Wise County.

Going to Clarendon as coach, Burton later became superintendent and serve 26 years as head of the junior college there. He served as Mayor for eight years, was a veterans [sic] of World War I and a 32nd degree Mason.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church and served as Sunday School superintendent and teacher for many years. His funeral services were held at the church Sunday afternoon with Masonic burial services in the Clarendon Cemetery.

Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Mrs. John Norris of Midland; two granddaughters; two sisters, Mrs. Keith Cates of Decatur and Mrs. Charlie Plaxco of Fort Worth; and one brother, Leonard Burton of Dallas.

Relatives from this area who attended the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Keith Cates, Mr. and Mrs. Thad Belew and Hale Belew of Decatur; Mrs. Charlie Plaxco, Mrs. Wendell Lester and Mr. and Mrs. Woody Wall of Fort Worth, and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Burton of Dallas.

According to the Baylor Bulletin, Ex-Student's Directory, 1920, Harley Burton earned his A.B. and A.M. from Baylor University in 1913 and 1915, respectively. He was a graduate of Decatur College, 1910. He was President of the Decatur club, and played football and basketball.
