The Sandersville Progress, Thursday, 2 Jan 1941:

Leading Figure for 50 Years, Had Held Many Offices
George C. Evans, 71, prominent figure in Sandersville for half a century, died quietly at his home Monday night, Dec. 23, about 10 o'clock, following an illness of several hours. He had been in failing health for several years, but had been active in his law practice until his death. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 from the residence, with interment in the family lot in the old city cemetery. Officiating at the services were the Rev. Carey T. Vinzant, pastor of the Baptist church, The Rev. E.G. Orahood, pastor of the Christian church, and Rev. Dr. Aquila Chamlee, of Fort Valley, former Baptist pastor here. Mr. Evans was the son of the late Sarah P. Evans and the late Beverly Daniel Evans, and was the last survivor of their five sons, who included the late Judge Beverly D. Evans, the late Willis Evans and the late Julian H. Evans, and the late Albert Louis Evans. He had passed his 71st birthday on Oct. 30, and he and Mrs. Evans would have marked their 42nd wedding anniversary Saturday, Dec. 28. A graduate of Mercer university in the class of 1887, Mr. Evan then attended the University of Georgia Law school, from which he graduated in 1890. He was a charter member of Chi Psi fraternity. He had twice been mayor of Sandersville, was a former solicitor of the city court, former chairman of the city board of education, and a former trustee of Mercer university. He was mayor when Sandersville's first brick school building, the old grammar school, was built, and chairman of the board of education when the old high school building was erected. He had been a member of the Washington County Bar Association for 50 years, and was its president at the time of his death. Mr. Evans had been a member of the National Democratic Convention when Woodrow Wilson was nominated for president in 1912, and had been a member of the convention again in 1920. Surviving are his wife, the former Daisy Latitia Warthen, two sons, John Benton Evans and Beverly Daniel Evans; one sister, Mrs. T.H. Booz, of Rome, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews. Active pall bearers were members of the Washington County Bar Association and county officials. Sandersville Funeral Home was in charge.
